DIRECTIONS
Take Rt15 to Exit 59; follow the signs for 69S or 63S (Whalley Avenue).
Heading south on Whalley Ave., you will cross one bridge. Immediately look left for Bill’s Carousel Ice Cream stand. You will want to make a stop there in the summer! Cross a second bridge, and a look to the left will give you a great view of the West Rock Ridge. Continue through the center of town, looking overhead for the street signs. Pass under West Rock Road, get into the left lane, and take the next left at the light (FIRTH ST.)
Proceed onto the Southern CT State College campus. Drive under the pedestrian bridge, and take your next left (Wintergreen Ave.) Now follow the brown signs indicating ‘West Rock Ridge State Park.”
Pass the Park Entrance on the left. Head toward the RT15 underpass, but DO NOT GO UNDER THE BRIDGE. You want to park on the right in the lot for the West Rock Ridge NatureCenter.
CLUES
Easy walk; tricky climb. Go through the opening in the wooden guard rail toward the brook. Follow the path downhill toward the falls. When the path branches, take the high road. Instead of following the brook, head to the right toward the edge overlooking the smaller gully. From the edge, looking across the gully, you will see the ONLY smooth gray rock poking out of the hill in front of you. To its left, are 2-sisters with a fallen comrade laying in the middle. The WINTERGREEN FALLS LETTERBOX is hidden at the base and behind the sisters under twigs. Find your own way carefully down the hill. And please hide the box carefully when you are done. There are many fun hikes and boxes to be discovered across the street in the Park thanks to Mrs. Wanderer and the Levreault Family.
