The Oshkosh Public Library is a beautiful domed structure in the heart of downtown Oshkosh. Originally constructed in 1900 with the help from the estates of prominent local lumberman Marshall Harris and former U.S. Senator Philetus Sawyer, the library has gone through several changes throughout the years. The latest, in 1994 brought back the look and feel of the original William Waters design.
Out front are Harris and Sawyer, the lions standing guard of the building, gifts form local newspaper publisher John Hicks. His contributions of local statues can be seen throughout the city.

The library is free, but has limited hours:
Library Hours
Mon. - Thurs.  9 - 9 p.m.
Friday  9 - 6 p.m.
Saturday 9 - 5 p.m.
Sunday 1 - 5 p.m.

Please check with their website for special events or hours:

Start your journey by entering the library at the main entrance on the north side nearest the parking lot.
Across from the checkout area is a set of stairs going down (or you can use the elevator, next to it).
When you get downstairs you will be in the Children's section. Look for the large wooden tree. How many lady bugs + owls are on it? A=_____

Next take the elevator to the second floor. Find the Local History section. Look for the map of Winnebago County from 1862 on a wall in this section. On this map, find the Plat of Waukau. Find the number assigned to the block bordered by Main and Washington, and Polk and Tyler. B=_____

Facing the map, turn right and follow the wall around to the short stairs leading to the Waters Building Genealogy section. Find the rotunda where Sawyer and Harris reside in white marble. Where were these made? C=_____ (use only the first letter of the city)

Go out onto the balcony overlooking a large lion on a pile of books. How many busts can you see in the lower windows? D=_____

Go back to the rotunda and turn right and follow through the rooms until you get to an elevator. Take this to the second floor again. Exit the elevator and immediately look right to a painting of the lions from in front of the library. Who painted this? E=_____ (use only the first letter of the last name)

Jump back into the elevator and take it to the first floor. Exit and head straight across the room to the far wall. (It is a bluish shade) Find a poster with a bunch of super heroes on it. (Believe it or not, the ink on this poster is made from the artist's ashes.) F=_____ (Third letter of the last name of the person memorialized here)

Now go back around toward the entrance area, and look for the Reserve area to the right of the check-out desk. Your prize is in these shelves and has this code on it:

E_____ F_____ C_____ A_____ B_____ D_____

Please use caution and take it to a quiet area to stamp in. The library can be quite busy at times. The Genealogy section is usually the quietest, but there are plenty of chairs and table along the outside walls. Thanks for looking for our box and let us know how you liked it!
Make sure to visit Sawyer and Harris out front!
