Prairie Grove Cemetery served residents from the late 1800's until the middle of the 20th century. This quaint little cemetery serves as a reminder of the pioneer community of Aleo. The cemetery has ties to the Prairie Grove Baptist Church. The oldest known grave in the cemetery dates back to 1895. World War II Hero Audie Murphey lived in the area for a time. His mother and grandparents are buried here. Victims of the 1927 tornado that came through nearby Nevada are also interred here.

Find the intersection of FM 1776 and CR 643 in Nevada, TX.
Drive 1.6 miles north on CR 643. You will find Prairie Grove Cemetery on your left.
Take the little dirt road on your left to enter the cemetery. The main section of the cemetery will be on the right side as you enter.

Locate the two infant graves at the SW corner of the cemetery. Both have the inscription "Budded on earth to bloom in Heaven". Stand in front of the stone with the lamb on it. Look to your left (north) at about the 10 o'clock position.
Go to the clump of Yucca plants and stand in front of Mary and William Gill's final resting place. Look again towards the north and find two tall head stones. One standing and the other toppled and pointing towards the relatives of a famous war hero.
Walk to these headstones, turn east and walk to the grave of Josie Bell Killian Murphy. This is where Audie Murphy's mother was laid to rest. His grandparents Sarah and J. D. Killian are the next graves to the left.
Take three to six steps east of their graves. Look south for a clump of three trees growing together. You will find the letterbox in the middle of theses trees.
