Letterbox Name: The Great American Pin-up Series: Heather (Go Bliss!)
Location: Hoffman Estates, IL
Distance: Less than a mile

A few years back, my son and I attended a football game in Hoffman Estates, IL, at the Sears Center. It was a game between the Chicago Bliss and the San Diego Seduction. Yes – it was a Lingerie Football League game. And while some will certainly debate the larger social implications surrounding the existence of a Lingerie Football League, I can tell you that we walked away from it thoroughly impressed by the way that both teams played. These ladies hit hard, and they take no prisoners.

Since then, I’ve noted the occasional Facebook post from the Chicago Bliss, as they’ve made it to the playoffs, and even to the league championship game, falling three times to the rival L.A. Temptation. But in 2013, the Bliss won it all, beating the Baltimore Charm for the league championship.

And while the image on this stamp is taken from a limited edition comic book cover, the name on the box is a tribute to Heather Furr, the Bliss’ quarterback and team captain.

NOTES REGARDING THE STAMP: This particular stamp image is taken from a Zenescope comic book cover. If you have young letterboxers, or are unsure whether this is going to be a stamp that you’ll find appropriate, let me offer this: it’s an entry in a series of pin-up stamps, dedicated to the sport of lingerie football. Proceed at your own risk! ☺

Heather

Enter the Lake Beverly Forest Preserve at the entrance on Higgins Road (Rte. 72) in Hoffman Estates.

Once you’ve parked, the trailhead can be seen on the west end of the parking lot. Walk toward the trail, and when you get past the fence, make an immediate left turn. Walk along the fence line and taking a few steps up to an asphalt track that leads westward.

Now directionally, this track would seem to be similar to its more established sister. But I assure you, it’s quite different.

Pass an area on the right where the trail falls away, and continue onward. As you duck under branches and vines, the trail will open up before you. About 12 steps after a particularly thick tangle of branches and vines, you’ll see a small path leading away from the trail at a 356-degree angle.

Take that path, climbing a small ridge, and stepping into a small grove of oak trees. Walk forward a few steps until you can see down the far side of the ridge. There, a few feet down the incline, you’ll see two fallen logs on top of one another.

Go to the north end of these logs. Heather is in the north end zone of the top log, waiting to be discovered.

Please use an orange marker or ink pad, and re-hide very well. Thanks!

The Great American Pin-up series is, first and foremost, a celebration of the style, femininity, and fun of pin-up art over the years. We hope that you enjoy the images as much as we’ve enjoyed selecting and carving them.
