Shin Oak Observation Deck is set in excellent black-capped vireo habitat. When the vireos begin arriving, they are establishing breeding territories and finding mates, a critical time for the highly endangered birds. For this reason, the refuge closes the deck when they first arrive (expected to be March 18 to April 5, 2013 but call the refuge to confirm). Once the birds settle into nesting activities, the refuge reopens the deck for visitors.
To locate the box walk toward the observation deck. When the log fence ends and handrails start look for the box on the right hand side. The box is on the ground between the handrail and the plants under leaves and grass.
