A group of hikers heard about a letterbox hidden somewhere on one of the beautiful Southeast Michigan Land Conservancy (SMLC) nature preserves. They set out to find the box and hoped they’d see some deer or Sandhill Cranes along the way.
SMLC is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to conserving and managing wildlife habitat in order to foster healthy ecosystems, protect air and water quality, and provide scenic enjoyment.
To learn more about SMLC, including the nature preserves, organized nature walks, community gardening and volunteer opportunities:
. Stop by the Conservancy farmhouse office to talk with the staff or pick up literature
. Go to www.smlcland.org
. Find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/southeastmichiganlandconservancy
The hikers thought they'd have better luck finding the letterbox if they split up, so they divided into seven groups and set off exploring. Keep track of what order the hikers were in to find the starting location for this letterbox.
The first group started out with four hikers:
• a CON led the way
• a SERVER came next
• NANCY took up the rear
• Before they started, ERN dropped out
The second group had just two members:
• a Foot went first, followed by an ARM
The third group had four hikers:
• THREE followed EIGHT
• 3 followed 8
The fourth group had five hikers:
• LAND was in the rear
• E followed close on the heels of E
• R came before E
• V led the way
The fifth group had only four hikers:
• D came last
• O followed close behind R
• A preceded D
The sixth group consisted of four hikers:
• the first hiker was SUPER
• the last was R
• O walked in front of R and followed I
There were six members in the seventh group:
• W walked before N
• SH followed N
• TO was first
• P was last
• I went before P
It’s approximately ¼ mile to the box.
Please park on the road - NOT in the driveway.
Walk up the driveway, passing a farmhouse on your right. After you pass an old windmill, jog slightly to your left; then go north along the trail. You’ll pass 3 gray buildings on your left and 1 red building on your right.
Walk past the kiosk and between the two fenced community organic gardens ( If you’d like to have a plot here, log onto smlcland.org or call (734) 484.6565 to learn more).
Keep walking North through the field until you reach the tree line.
Keeping the trees on your left, walk to the opening in the woods.
Continue North on the path through the woods until you come to an open field. Take a minute to look for the deer and Sandhill Cranes which can often be seen here. At a distance, one can be mistaken for the other.
Now turn back around and retrace your footsteps through the woods to a tall stump on your right – here lies the letterbox the hikers were searching for.
Please close the box tightly and hide it well in the same location where you found it. Thank you.
