Not Waving but Drowning
by Stevie Smith

Nobody heard him, the dead man,
But still he lay moaning:
I was much further out than you thought
And not waving but drowning.

Poor chap, he always loved larking
And now he's dead
It must have been too cold for him his heart gave way,
They said.

Oh, no no no, it was too cold always
(Still the dead one lay moaning)
I was much too far out all my life
And not waving but drowning.

This is a poem that I have always loved and when I carved this stamp I thought it was a good name to go with it. Barcelona, as well as Lake Erie is a special place to my family and I. We have spent countless hours and days collecting what washes up on its shores. Only fitting that we place a letterbox here.
Clue:
The best place to park is in the upper lot of the Barcelona Harbor Boat Launch Facility on rte 5 in Westfield NY. Here you can see the infamous Sea Lion, a replica of a 16th century merchant ship built in Mayville NY and now dry docked.
As you stand looking to the back of the Sea Lion, look to your right and notice a small white building on the cliff overlooking the lake. This is the chamber of commerce. Walk toward and then past this building. Once past, you will see several picnic tables and near the farthest one a large maple tree. The biggest one up here. Around the back and at its base is a crevice. Beneath several pieces of broken brick you will see its "Not Waving But Drowning." As always, please repackage and rehide well.
