Bighorn at Berthoud Pass Letterbox
County: Grand, Clear Creek
Berthoud Pass, elevation 11,307! Great mountain road for driving! Gorgeous views! The Continental Divide Trail crosses the summit here, and here is where the Bighorn of Berthoud Pass letterbox can be found.
After the exciting, twisty drive up the pass from Winter Park, park at the south end of the lot opposite the restrooms, near the gate across a service road up to what appears to be a weather station on the top of the mountain. Enjoy the spectacular scenery and take your pictures with the Continental Divide Trail sign. Then notice the CT trail marker on the service road just up the hill past the gate. Walk up this road, passing the CT marker on your right. In just a few steps, pass the 2nd CT marker where the CT trail goes off to the left, and continue uphill on the road. Begin counting steps. About 40 steps up the road, you’ll pass a first group of small fir trees on the left above the road. About 50 steps beyond this first group of small fir trees, you might observe a large white boulder off to the right below the trail. Continue uphill on the road for about 20 more steps to a grove of tall pines left of the trail, fronted by two tall dead lodgepole pines, victims of the pine bark beetle. Behind the tall living tree on the left in this group, look for a SPOR, under which you will find the Bighorn of Berthoud Pass letterbox pouch. Please be sure to re-bag, reseal carefully, and recover the pouch well with rocks to hide and protect the stamp and logbook.
Enjoy the drive, the walk, the view, and the letterbox! Thanks, Viewfinder
