Big Four Mountain is in the Cascade Range of Washington and on its north flank debris piles form from avalanches and are able to remain there year round because of the continuous shade provided by the mountain. During the summer, snow-melt streams flow beneath the debris piles and cause caves to be formed in the ice. The Big Four Ice Caves trail #723 is one of the most popular hikes in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest and is where you can see the ice caves and this letterbox.
Directions:
From Granite Falls go east about 26 miles on the Mt. Loop Highway to the Big Four Picnic Area and park. A federal recreation pass is required.
Clues:
Walk on the trail to the end at a circular gravel observation area. Turn west away from the ice caves and walk up a faint trail 30 steps to a Y jct. Go left 5 steps and look left for a boulder with the microbox behind it under a flat rock and leaves.
