The SOLAR SYSTEM LETTERBOXES will introduce you to the Earth And Sky Discovery Trail and follows the Utopia Disc Golf Course located behind the Discovery Museum, in the area of Sacred Heart University, on upper Park Avenue in Bridgeport, CT. There are many side trails to explore in addition to the ones visited in this series. Remember that this particular part of the Solar System is highly trafficked by flying saucers. Please share this part of the universe with your fellow travelers, and step aside is someone yells “FORE!”
You can Park between the Discovery Museum and Discovery Magnet School, and pick up the trail at the Treetops Rope Course or Planetary Trail, walking left behind the school and out into the open field at Veterans’ Park. OR you can park at the stone wall on Park Avenue, and cross the field to the obvious kiosk at the treeline. From the kiosk, walk left to the next break in the treeline. And this will be the entrance to the first hole/space station for the Disc Golf Course.

CLUES:
LETTERBOX #1 – SPACE, As soon as you enter the shadow of the trees, look to your right. You will see three sets of bent trees; the first are very bent, the second are a little less bent and the third a little less than these. Behind and at the base of the third set of trees, you will find a pile of sawed-off logs. The letterbox is hidden underneath. PLEASE be secretive when you stamp in and hide the box again. The SPACE LETTERBOX is a BIG BOX. If it goes missing, the rest of the series will not be as much fun.
LETTERBOX #2 – SUN, You will see the first chain basket/space station for the Disc Golf Course. You will be following the Golf Course. The signs show you the shape of the course, and an arrow on each sign will show you the direction to follow. Go downhill past space station #1. Turn right at the fork and you will see a small sign with a green #2. As you approach chain basket #2, look to your left to the boulders on the knoll. A large oak tree is almost fused to a squarish rock there. Behind the rock and under a square stone you will find the SUN LETTERBOX. Hide carefully.
LETTERBOX #3 – MERCURY, Walk to the flag at space station #2. The trail leads left to #3. With basket #3 at your back, look over the top of the firepit to a fallen log. Under the sawn end of the fallen log, and under a smaller log, you will find the MERCURY LETTERBOX. Hide carefully.
LETTERBOX #4 – VENUS, At space station #4, look to your right. You will see a tree with a long hole. There is a darker tree behind it. The VENUS LETTERBOX is behind this second tree under a rock. Hide carefully.
LETTERBOX #5 – EARTH, The trail continues past space station #4. Before you come to the paved road, there is a clearing. Up ahead, you can see another kiosk. And to the right , is a sign. To the left, is a chunk of brickwork masonry (space junk!). Go left, over the footbridge. Space station flag #5 is at the top of the hill. At the flag, look to the right. (You can already see the next sign, #6. Be patient and turn left instead and head to the edge of those flat boulders. The EARTH LETTERBOX is hidden at the bottom edge of the crevasse, behind a boomerang shaped stone. Hide carefully.
LETTERBOX #6 – MARS, Head back to the sign for space station #6. The trail continues to the left of the sign. Facing #6 space station, you can already see the sign for #7 to the right. A little into the woods and behind this sign is a fallen tree. Under the root end of the fallen tree, and where another tree has fallen across it, you will find the MARS LETTERBOX. Hide carefully.
LETTERBOX #7 – JUPITER, Head to the flag for #7, over the creek and across the gravel road. Facing the number of the chain basket, look into the woods to your left. You will see a large three-sister tree. The JUPITER LETTERBOX is hidden in the middle of the sisters under some stones. Hide carefully.
LETTERBOX #8 – SATURN, The trail continues downhill. When you have just passed the broken tree trunk, look to the right. There is a pile of logs, and behind the logs is a more space junk. The SATURN LETTERBOX is hidden there. Hide carefully.
LETTERBOX #9 – URANUS, Follow the trail across the road to the top of the concrete dam and to the sign for space station #9. Go to the chain basket for #9. In the woods, behind the very large tree is a fallen tree. The URANUS LETTERBOX is hidden in the root end of the fallen tree, under a few stones. Hide carefully.
LETTERBOX #10 – NEPTUNE – The trail continues to station #10. You will see a tree to the right with a green arrow sign nailed to it.. Walk until you can almost see the flag at the top of the hill. STOP! There is an unmarked trail to your right, leading into the woods. Follow it to the gravel path. You will see to your right a concrete post marker. Look to the left in the grass and you will see its twin. The NEPTUNE LETTERBOX is hidden behind the twin. Go back to the tree with the green arrow which is at the treeline and at the edge of the field. You have successfully navigated this portion of space. Back to your car, or to the CONSTELLATION LETTERBOX SERIES that is hidden nearby, or to any of the great educational or athletic adventures that the park and museum offers.
