Peanut Butter was a Labrador
Whose favorite place was the great outdoors
She loved to hike and fetch and swim and the mud
But best of all she loved her belly rubbed

The name "Mine Falls" derives from the 1700s, when low quality lead was supposedly mined from the island below the falls. In the early 1800s the potential of the Nashua River to drive the wheels of industry was recognized. Workers used shovels and mules to dig the three-mile long canal, which provides a vertical drop of 36 feet at the mills.
The Gatehouse near the falls was built in 1886—with the first gates being built in 1826 (Gonashua.com)

To get to this letterbox, you will enter Mine Falls through the Nashua South Parking lot entrance. Take exit 5W off of Rt. 3 in Nashua. Head West on Rt. 111/West Hollis Street. Bear off to Riverside Dr. towards the Nashua Police Department and just past the police station, head to your right towards the school. Take your first left into the high school and follow the road around to the back past the tennis courts and park near the track. Once you have parked walk down the sidewalk past the track and past the maintenance buildings. There is a road block, but a way to get around it and you will be in the park. You’ll want to take the path to the left.

Before you cross the bridge, you will see a lesser path (red path) to your left that goes along the canal, you’ll want to follow this path through the woods. The trail is well marked and people jog, bike and fish along this trail, but there are rocks and roots and hills – the perfect place for a pup!

As you wander along the path, you will go over some hills and snake along the canal and will eventually get to Mill Pond, where you will cross over a small catch basin. Once you cross over the basin, you will go up a hill and follow the trail as it jogs to the right. You will come to a rather sharp left turn in the trail and see a trail going down to the lake on your right side. Follow that down the hill, where you will end up at lake level. Go through the clearing-ish area and follow the trail that hugs the lake.

As you walk along the trail, you will see frogs, ducks, herons, and dragon flies! On your left, you will note two pines that are giants among the others and the tree roots almost make walls along the trail. You will come to a sharper left turn with a pine that is very close and sort of hanging over the trail, with many low branches. At the base of this tree, you will find your treasure.

After you have re-hidden the box, you can follow the trail the same way and it will reconnect to the main trail, you can either go left up the tree root stairs to return to the school, or you can follow it to the right and go the rest of the way around the lake. Just down the trail at the boat launch are some picnic tables by the ice skating rink and if you continue on you will go up another hill, under some power lines, and back into the woods. Follow the trail down to your left once you are in the woods and then to your right to take you down towards the Nashua River boat launch. Follow the road towards your right and you will come to the Gate House and the dam, and more picnic tables. The green trail entrance is here and it will take you along this side of the pond where you will come to the 3rd bridge (1st one that crosses to the other side) and you can cross over and return to the high school parking lot.

Please be courteous and discreet and rehide box well when done. Thank you=)
