Discover the treasures that live just outside San Francisco's Golden Gate in the waters of the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary. No need to take a boat ride! Just look around our Headquarters on Crissy Field Beach in the Presidio to find some unusual critters that live in our sanctuary and in San Francisco Bay nearby. Find this building to begin your letterboxing.

While the sanctuary is full of many varieties of seabirds, marine mammals, and sharks, it is also home to less appreciated animals, among them, crustaceans. This letterbox duo lets you explore the habitats of a couple of these crustaceans.

1. Malacostraca
Your first creature lives inside the Farallones Marine Sanctuary Visitor Center (free to enter, open Wednesday-Sunday, 10am-4pm). Walk inside and enjoy the exhibits. To find the name of your animal, use the museum to solve this puzzle.

___: Common name of the sea bird with a horn protruding from its bill: 10th letter
___: Common name of the marine mammal lying on the floor: 6th letter
___: Common name of the eel-like fish in the tank: 3rd letter
___: Name of the sanctuary just to the North: 4th letter

___: Common name of the bird that scientists lured back to Devil's Slide with wooden decoys: 1st letter
___: Common name of the tiny crustacean that fills the bellies of blue whales: 2nd letter
___: Common name of the marine mammal threatened by cat litter: 3rd letter
___: Common name of the largest shark in the sanctuary: 1st letter

Locate this animal's exhibit. Facing the exhibit, walk two steps to the right. You will see a wooden panel with a gap behind it nailed to three pilings. Reach into this gap and to the left to retrieve your letterbox.

Box 2 coming soon!
