This letterbox is part of the 2013 Roads to Freedom program, and is available from June 1, 2013 – September 2, 2013. To participate in the full program, please pick up your free Civil War Journal (program guide) from any Adams County Library or at the Historic Train Station in downtown Gettysburg.

This letterbox is located at Strawberry Hill Nature Preserve. It is 1.44 miles in distance and is rated "moderate" by Roads to Freedom standards.

Note: This hike is the first of two located at Strawberry Hill. It may be completed separately (1.44 miles roundtrip), or combined with the clues for Hancock & Armistead (3.94 miles roundtrip).
- Begin your adventure at the Trail Head located behind our historic pink log cabin. This cabin was built in 1798 and is designated as a Civil War Building. Take care while crossing the street and grab a trail map from the kiosk in front of the cabin before you head out.
- For the first part of the journey, you’ll be following the Nature Trail, which is marked by WHITE blazes on the trees. A blaze is a painted symbol that lets hikers know the path of a trail.
- As you head through the stand of pine trees, notice how springy the ground is – try jumping up and down. There is a thick layer of pine needles here, which makes the ground much softer than regular dirt. Follow the trail down the steps on your right, and then take a left.
- As the trail takes a turn to the left, you are passing through a swamp forest. These areas are important because they filter water naturally!
- Continue to follow the white blazes of the Nature Trail as you meander through the forest alongside one of two creeks at Strawberry Hill. This is Swamp Creek, one of the headwaters of the Chesapeake Bay!
- When you cross the bridge over Swamp Creek, you’re about halfway to the first post!
- After the bridge, two paths lead to the left. The second path, beyond the Swamp Forests sign, is the Nature Trail. Follow the blazes.
- You’ll meet up with Swamp Creek again as you approach a large bridge. Multiple trails meet here so keep an eye on the blazes. Cross the bridge and then take the Swamp Creek Trail to the right. This trail is marked by PINK blazes. You’re not far now!
- Continue on Swamp Creek Trail as it gently slopes upward. Keep an eye on the ground around you. Do you see where the dirt turns completely black? This is a charcoal mound. Historically, charcoal, used in smelting iron ore, was created by burning mounds of wood very, very slowly. You’re standing on the remains of one of those mounds. Look around – the post is nearby!
- You can now return to the starting point the same way you came, or continue on to the Hancock & Armistead post. If you decide to locate the second post, please turn to the Hancock & Armistead page in your Journal.
