This letterbox is part of the 2013 Roads to Freedom program, and is available from June 1, 2013 – September 2, 2013. To participate in the full program, please pick up your free Civil War Journal (program guide) from any Adams County Library or at the Historic Train Station in downtown Gettysburg.

This letterbox is located in the Gettysburg National Military Park and can be accessed from the National Cemetery parking area. It is 2.60 miles in distance and is rated "hard" by Roads to Freedom standards.

NOTE: Due to the high volume of people and traffic anticipated in Gettysburg National Military Park, it is recommended that you use available shuttle services. Please use designated parking areas.

- From the parking lot, locate and walk to the Maryland Monument.
- Walk south (away from town) along the walkway and past the Delaware Monument until you get to a small white house. This is the Leister Farm. It was used as General Meade’s Headquarters during the battle of Gettysburg in 1863.
- Continue along the green walkway to the right and up the hill.
- As you approach the top of the hill, you will see the monument of General Meade on his horse. Continue on the same walkway as it curves around the front of this statue.
- Continue past several cannons and caissons (wagons used to carry ammunition), and carefully cross the roadway when the sidewalk ends.
- After crossing, you should see four wayside panel displays explaining the third day of the battle of Gettysburg, Pickett’s Charge. Continue past these displays as the sidewalk meanders through a field and turns into a dirt trail near a rock wall.
- Turn left before crossing the rock wall and walk past a series of 4 monuments dedicated to those from states whose names begin with an “M.” (The first monument looks like a boulder.) After passing a fifth monument (to a non-“M” state), you will reach the road.
- Carefully cross the road and walk along the split rail fence near the tall monument dedicated to those from the “Green Mountain State.”
- Continue walking south walking past the large-domed monument with the statue of the Goddess of Victory and Peace on top of it. (Be careful walking against traffic as most drivers are looking at the battlefield and monuments, not for pedestrians!)
- After passing this monument, continue along the road past a half-circle style monument made of cement block. Just beyond this is the statue of Father Corby mounted on top of a large boulder.
- Keep walking through the next intersection. You are almost there!
- Beyond this intersection, you should see a small trail on your left leading to a tall monument. The post you seek is located near the small bench area at the top of this pathway.
- Return to your vehicle by retracing your steps back to the parking area.
