This letterbox is part of the 2013 Roads to Freedom program, and is available from June 1, 2013 – September 2, 2013. To participate in the full program, please pick up your free Civil War Journal (program guide) from any Adams County Library or at the Historic Train Station in downtown Gettysburg.

This letterbox is located in downtown Gettysburg. It is 1.12 miles in distance and is rated "moderate" by Roads to Freedom standards.

NOTE: Locating this character requires you to walk along and cross busy streets. Always be aware of traffic and follow all rules.

• Exit the Race Horse Alley parking garage on the Gettysburg Hotel side. Locate the plaque in the large stone outside the garage entrance. On what day were riflemen enlisted as volunteers? ______
• After reading the plaque, turn right on Race Horse Alley and proceed under the overhand to the street.
• Turn right and walk to the Gettysburg Lincoln Railroad station. This is the location where President Abraham Lincoln arrived for the dedication of Soldiers' National Cemetery on Nov. 18, 1863. You may want to visit the cemetery on your visit here.
• Now turn around, head toward the Square and past the Gettysburg Hotel. Using the crosswalk, stop in front of the David Wills house. What word did President Lincoln repeat 3 times in his speech? _________
• Walk south around the Square, past the statue of Lincoln and the tourist dedicated in 1991, and turn left on the next street.
• Continue on this street 2 blocks until you reach a church on your left. President Lincoln attended a political rally here following the dedication in the Soldiers’ National Cemetery.
• Your journey continues south until you reach the house whose address number is the date in the 1st clue with the number “2” added to the end. __ __ 2 Note who was born in this house. You may want to learn more about her by locating another Roads to Freedom character.
• Passing this house, carefully use the next crosswalk to cross to the other side of this street.
• Turn left and start counting parking meters. Stop when you reach the ___th one. (Number of letters in the word Lincoln repeated 3 times – 3).
• Near this parking meter, you should find a wayfinding station dedicated to a family that lived here. Did you know Abraham Lincoln walked past this house on his way to deliver the Gettysburg Address?
• To the left of the wayfinding station and a wooden barrel, you should find a passageway between the buildings. Follow this path to the rear of the house, taking notice of the bullet holes in the brick wall on your right.
• The post you seek is located outside the garden to the left of the path. (Please respect the surroundings as this is private property.)
• To return to your vehicle, turn around and head north through the Square, and back to the parking garage.
