This letterbox is located at the St. Joseph Township - Swearingen Memorial Library, 201 N. 3rd St., in St. Joseph, Illinois, in honor of the 2013 Summer Reading Program. The hours of the library when you may search for the letterbox are:
Mon & Wed: 1 PM - 8 PM
Tue & Thurs: 9 AM - 6 PM
Fri: 9 AM - 7 PM
Sat: 9 AM - 3 PM
Volunteers from the St. Joseph Women’s Club first opened a library in St. Joseph in 1929 in a room at the local beauty shop. Later the library was moved to St. Joseph High School.
In honor of her parents, Maude Davis provided a building to be named Swearingen Memorial Library at 201 North Third Street for the library in 1956 and a trust for maintenance. Members of the Women’s Club continued to volunteer as staff for the library.
A referendum was passed in 1973 by the Township to establish a tax base for the library and a Board of Directors was elected. The library was renamed the St. Joseph Township – Swearingen Memorial Library and a librarian was hired.
The library was expanded when the library received a state grant in 1988. The present library is where you will find the letterbox. Books can take you anywhere and so can letterboxing.
Enter the library on the east side at the main door. Say hello to the wonderful staff at the library. If you need help, they will assist you. Locate the exit door in the NW corner of the library and from this door begin to walk toward the south. You will pass three floor vents and then see two bookcases containing books/copies of old newspapers in the SW corner filled with St. Joseph events and history. Somewhere on these shelves you will find a small “pencil case-sized” letterbox containing a stamp, logbook, and stamp pad attached to the metal shelving by magnet. Please date, stamp, and leave a note with your entry. Please be discreet and replace the stamp with all the contents into the case. (It's a tight fit.) Please also report the find and let me know if anything is damaged or missing.
