UPDATED CLUES 6/15/2020. After 17 years this box is still alive and well in its original spot but there is much undergrowth that wasn't there 17 years ago. The clues have been rewritten to make the box easier to find.

Difficulty: easy 5 minute walk

Background: The North South Trail (NST) runs 77 miles from the
Rhode Island's southern shore at the Atlantic Ocean in Charlestown to its northern border at the Massachusetts line in Burrillville. The
North South Trail was proposed over three decades ago by George
Ernst, a hiker from Cranston. He suggested building new trails and
connecting them together with already existing hiking trials to
create a long path across the state. The state of RI studied the
idea in 1978 but the trail wasn't actually built until 1991. The
North South Trail letterbox series is a series of letterboxes
placed along various points on the trail to celebrate this
achievement. Each stamp contains a common image that represents
the NST as well as an image unique to the stamp's location. The North South Trail – Buck Hill , the second letterbox in this series, is placed near the end of the trail in Burrillville.

Acknowledgements:

A big thanks to Bungalow Boxer who carved the stamp in this letterbox for me.

Driving Directions: From the junction of Rt.’s 100 and 107 in the village of Pascoag, in Burrillville, follow Rt. 100 north. At 3.5 miles turn left onto Buck Hill Rd. Go 1 mile to trailhead on right side of road (if you get to the fire tower you went to far.) There’s a sign at the beginning of the trail that says Buck Hill Trailhead and North South Trail. There is room for one car to park here. There’s much more room to park ahead on Buck Hill Rd just past Staghead Parkway.

Clues: From the trailhead it is 3.5 miles to the end of the North South trail. (don’t worry you won’t have to walk that far for your reward; it is just 5 minutes down the trail.) There are rocks and boulders everywhere. This made it difficult for me to find unique landmarks to use as clues. Walk down the trail a short way. You will soon come to what seems to be several rock steps going up the trail. Start looking for your landmarks after these stone steps. You are looking for two 5 – 6 ft. high boulders that are positioned on either side of the trail. The rocks form the edges of the trail. The right rock has a knee high “shelf” running along the trail edge. From these two rock you will see a V tree just ahead on the left side of the trail. walk to this tree and stand on the trail with your back to the tree. Take a bearing of 80 degrees and bushwhack 9 steps to a pyramid rock. Box is under the pyramid rock.

Hike length: 0.5 miles
