Begin at the Copper Harbor State Dock. You go down to launch your boat, but change your mind and take a left on the rocky and rooty Hunter’s Point Marina Trail. When given the option, stick to the South Trail on the sheltered side of the point. Steer clear of parking lots – you’re out for a hike, after all. The North Beach is a beautiful place to relax and toss some stones, but resist the temptation until after you’ve found what you’re looking for. As you hike over some smooth rocks, the North and South Beach Trails join into one. Take a rest on the bench, with the harbor to your right, and the rocky beach to your left.
With a birch tree to your left and cedars on your right, look for a root pointing ahead and to the right. Walk 8 paces in the direction of the root. A twisty cedar crosses part of the path down to the harbor, where there is a view of the State and Isle Royale Queen docks. From the twisty cedar, and the unnatural wood nearby, go 6 paces to the east. There’s no bear in there, just a little stamp to commemorate your visit to Copper Harbor and Hunter’s Point.
