Known to the local tribes as Atsingnetsing, the town of Big Flats is nestled in the Chemung Valley. Along the banks of Sing Sing Creek (or Cuthrie Run) was the Iroquois village of Runonvea. During General Sullivan's campaign of 1779, Runonvea was destroyed along with approximately 40 other Iroquois villages between Fort Niagara and New Jersey, in an effort to quell the attacks on American settlers by Iroquois and Loyalists.

CLUE:
From I-86, take Exit 49 for Big Flats. Drive east down Main Street - it turns into County Road 64. Just past the corner of CR 64 and Winters Road you will see the historical marker for Runonvea. Backing up, however, look for a group of trees on the southeast corner of the intersection; just before the bridge. There is a three-trunked tree in this group... You will find your tribute to the tribe there.
