The Thinking Wall

Between Kingman and Oatman, Arizona, on the eastern flanks of the rugged Black Mountains, the Cool Springs Camp perched beside Old Rte. 66, is a beacon to weary travelers. Built in the 1930’s, the facilities included a café, garage, gas station and tourist cabins, located just before the steep winding treacherous ascent over the mountains.

When the new alignment of Rte. 66 opened in 1951 (later paved over by I-40), most travelers bypassed the longer more-winding, original alignment, and Cool Springs was left “high and dry”. The business was converted to a poultry operation called “The Chicken Ranch,” but after a fire it was abandoned over the years, the elements and vandals took their tolls, toppling the stone walls.

This is the shortened version but additional information can be
found at: http://www.coolspringsroute66.com/history.htm.

Today, Cool Springs is a roadside stop for refreshments and restroom break.

Clues:
Pull into Cool Springs and stand in front of the middle gas pump facing the road. At 240 deg. southwest spot the stone wall up the hill. That is your destination. To find the prize choose one of these three ways (facing the highway with the wall in front of you:

• Walk to the sole oleander and set 60 degrees east.
• From the edge of the wall (south) count 5 paces
• From the edge of the wall (south) count 3 large bottom rocks

What you came for is behind a rock that really doesn't fit the coloring of the wall. Be sure to hide well with the same rock so these directions work for the next letterboxer.

Watch out for snakes and scorpions. When in the desert, always carry water not matter what the temperature.

While visiting Cool Springs, check out other letterboxes in the vicinity.
