Corning Manor is a quiet, middle-income neighborhood nestled in East Corning, in the Southern Tier of New York. It was established in the early 1950's in response to the Baby Boom, and features "kit" ranch houses built on concrete slabs, arranged in a large oval situated between the Corning Country Club and Reinhart's Sand and Gravel.

I spent many years of a happy childhood in that neighborhood, and one of my fondest memories was riding bikes with my friends to the bottom of the Manor to the park to play. Of course, since then, the park has changed quite a bit. Gone is the merry-go-round and impossible jungle gym... but the memories live on.

CLUE:

Take I-86 to Exit 47 (Gibson/East Corning). Turn right at the light to 352 East. After one mile, turn left onto Fairway Road, then right onto Spaulding Drive. Drive all the way to the end of Spaulding and park.

Welcome to Shawn A. Lane Memorial Park! We hope you enjoy your visit!

Climb the steps and survey the land. It was a lot different back in the '80s when we were young and care-free. Near the pavilion we used to spin our friends on the merry-go-round until we were dizzy!

Make your way to the flagpole and read about our fallen neighborhood hero. Take a moment to reflect on his sacrifice for our country.

Head east and "balance" your way across the park.

Since (hopefully) it's a nice day, why don't you sit on the bench between the two swing sets?

Behind you, at 85 degrees, you will see a tree with a large trunk. Walk to it and take a few steps into the woods, then turn to look back out at the playground. Reach into the skeleton tree to your right if you dare!
