The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in southwestern Oklahoma is the oldest managed wildlife preserve in the United States. Thanks to Presidents McKinley and Roosevelt, over 59,000 acres of gorgeous grassland and mountaintops have been set aside for the enjoyment and propagation of many endangered species of game. Within about 2 miles one afternoon, we saw deer, longhorn, bison and elk. The next day we saw wild turkeys in the same spot. This park is truly one of America’s treasures.

The Visitor Center is at the junction of State Highways 115 and 49, about 20 miles northwest of Lawton. Hours of operation are 10am to 5:30pm, closed Tuesdays and major holidays. Enjoy the museum and pick up a trail map there.

To the box:
From the Visitor Center take a left onto Highway 115. Remain on Hwy 115 until you see the road for Jed Johnson Lake, Rush Lake and Holy City. From there you will take the first road on your left. Park in the circle at the end of the road.
Stand in the cirlce and find the trail that heads off to the West. Follow this trail unti you reac the tower. It s a beautiful view of the lake and surrounding area.
Place your back agaist the cold metal door of the tower. Once again take the trail west.
Follow this less traveled path until it seems there is no more. Look for the three sisters fou. Amoung the burns and ashes grows new life except for in the bed of cold, hard stone. There is where you will find what you seek.

Please be sure you are unseen. This is an "off-beat" path but still very open. Caution for snakes and other wildlife. Please rememer, Leave no Trace... Pack In - Pack Out.
