Lonely Letterbox: the Third Magic Mission ~ CLUES

Planted by: Marissa Moon and her dad, MoonPop, on 4/21/13

Active as of: 10/3/23

Are y'all ready for another Magic Mission after the originals in Weowna Beach Park and the Secret Garden Adventure in Evergreen Park? I hope that's a yes, because this time, we're off to visit the elves!

Keeney Park is an isolated and little known park despite being squashed between two major streets (NE 8th and Northup Way). (Directions: From SR-520, take 148th Street NE exit south. Turn left on Northup Way. Park is on the right. Courtesy: https://www.bellevuewa.gov/keeney.htm Beyond that, parking can be found near St. Peter's United Methodist Church - turn right into the drive, then right again into one of two parking spaces near a small set of stairs leading to the trails.) There is a distinct feeling of separation in Keeney - nothing too crowded, nothing too big, and everything you need for a little bit of manageable exploring. In spite of the cars whizzing by on Northup Way virtually right next to the park and the houses pressing against it on the other side, it is still its own little paradise.

Elves used to wander amongst humans before vast amounts of their forest homes were urbanized and pruned into gardens or parks. Within what we call Keeney Park is in fact a lonely refuge of woodland elves. Don't expect to see one, since they, like most creatures of magic, have become reclusive and shy. However, they have left a token, for those so inclined to find it, within their home. This is your next Magic Mission - find the token.

Your mission will begin at the small set of wooden stairs just before three paths come together. (If you have parked by the Church Pea Patch, simply cross the street to where the road forms a circle around an island. The steps are visible just beyond.) Climb the stairs and continue straight on.

You enter into what was likely once a grand corridor of the elves in more Ancient Days. Trees, almost evenly spaced, seem to form the corridor's pillars. Note the tattered carpets of moss in the trees' moist shade.

Follow the corridor till you come to a crossroads just in front of a meadow, an enchanted gathering place of the elves. Here, turn right, and then left.

Ahead of you, you will see a lone evergreen on the path. Within the recesses of this tree is the elven token you seek: their Lonely Letterbox.

Please ensure the letterbox is well-concealed after you have exchanged stamps and resealed baggies/lids. Afterwards, take time to explore the rest of Keeney Park!

Remember the elves!
