There is a fork in the road at Levante Street and Anillo Way in Carlsbad. Last October, a six-foot-tall fork suddenly appeared at that fork in the road. Residents loved it. It was clever, made you smile and chuckle when you went by it. Chuck Carroll, local resident, took over four months to create the sculpture (made of wood and painted silver) but was in place at the fork in the road for only a few days. The City of Carlsbad removed it, stating it was a hazard and was placed there illegally. Neighborhood residents responded by placing various forks in its place: scattered plastic forks, signs saying " Where fork art thou?" and "May the fork be with you", for Halloween someone put out a pumpkin with a fork carving, for Thanksgiving there was a paper mache turkey with a fork in it... The people spoke but the city would not relent.

Recently it was decided the fork sculpture would have a permanent home at the Meals on Wheels headquarters in Old Town (San Diego). Meals on Wheels helps feed seniors who have come to their own fork in the road and chosen to stay home rather than enter assisted living facilities.

Meanwhile, determined to have their fork in the road, neighbors have gotten the best of the city. Dangling from a tree on private property near the fork in a road is a giant, eight-foot long, handmade fork.

For more info, google "Fork in the Road Carlsbad CA" for lots of pix and videos.

At the fork in the road, either park on Levante Street just past the fork, or go right up Anillo Way and make a u-turn then park on the North side of the street up the hill a little way up from the fork. Either of these choices make it so you don't have to cross the street. The fork is hanging from a tree with a dark-colored trunk. (*see note below). Up the slope a few steps are two trees that have a light-colored trunk. Get up behind them and face west. Between the right side of these trees and the low agave is where you will find your treasure.
This is a busy area. I recommend going back to your car or walk a little away from the area to stamp-in. As always, be on the look-out when replacing the box and cover it well.
May the fork be with you!!

*11 March 2013: As of today, the fork hanging from the tree is missing. Souvenir? : ( A boxer was able to find the letterbox even though the fork is missing so I intend to leave the box where it is, hoping someone will put the fork back/replace it.
