Pennhurst school and hospital was a facility used to treat people with mental and physical disabilities. The original construction of the site started in 1903 and was called The Eastern State Institution for the Feeble-Minded and Epileptic. The patients ranged from infants to people over 70 years of age and were separated by their IQ level. Many of the buildings are connected by a tunnel system used for transporting handicapped patients. The institution was found guilty of beatings by staff and other patients, assault, and extended periods of isolation were uncovered. Eventually in 1987, Pennhurst closed and residents moved into other group homes and facilities. The buildings on the property still stand and have been used as a haunted attraction during September, October and November. This has become one of our favorite places to visit around Halloween. To find Pennhurst Asylum, travel to Spring City on route 724 and take Old Schuylkill Road. Turn onto Brown Drive until you reach a pair of concrete pillars one on each side of the road. Stop at this point and do not continue any further as it is private property. Behind the pillar on the right and up a small embankment is a very large tree. Pennhurst is hidden behind this tree under a SPOR. Please rehide well and do not attempt to travel any further. The only time you can actually see the facility is during the Halloween season where you will be transported there by bus.
