Love Rock is located near Lykens, PA, which holds an Indian traditional story. Harold and William Wingans, early English settlers, were in search of adventure and wealth when they encountered a party of Indians. They found themselves on agreeable footing with the savages and were invited to their camping ground which appeared to be a permanent Indian town. The twin brothers soon learned of the chief’s adopted daughter who was to marry his son. The princess was hidden in a tent guarded by several braves. She would sing in excellent English as the brothers listened to her low musical voice telling of her being captured by the redskins, adopted by the chief and now being forced to marry his son. Harold and William were astonished and rescued the white girl, traveling by horse. While fleeing, William and the girl jumped off a rock ledge by horseback. The horse died upon landing and the two escaped on foot. However, Harold was caught and killed by the Indians. The chief’s heartbroken son remained in this location even after the tribe moved, waiting for his love. He carved two seats in the rocks and remained here for five years. Ten years later, William brought his wife and child back to these rocks. Upon seeing the girl, the Indian adorer closed his eyes and died in one of the carved seats.

To find Love Rock travel to Lykens, PA and take Market Street south at the light. Continue crossing the first bridge and travel straight looking for Park View Road. Take this left and make the first right onto Laurel Lane. You will see a sign for Love Rock on the left. Park along Laurel Lane, not blocking any driveways. Walk to the basketball hoop at the bend and continue up the paved lane. At the gray shed you will see three light posts along a driveway. Follow the path to the left at the third light post and you will soon see a ONE WAY sign indicating the trail. Continue on the trail way above traffic on your left, passing a large flat rock in the middle of the trail that looks like a table. Look for a large rock on your right that looks like it was split with an ax. Love rock is hidden behind a rock at 140 degrees from this point.

After rehiding well, hike to the top of the rocks near the split pine tree, and you will see the carved seats where the Indian chief’s son died while waiting for his love. Please be careful when looking over the ledge and hope you enjoyed the legend of Love Rock.
