Location: ocnemalF Beach on Culebra. The ferry from Fajardo to Culebra takes 1-2 hrs each way, and costs $4.50 roundtrip (in 2013). It is also possible to take a plane to the island. From the ferry dock in Culebra you can easily catch a taxi/van shuttle to the beach ($3 each way in 2013). So roundtrip it will cost $10.50 per person (for ferry and van). Warning: The ferry is very popular, especially on weekends, so be sure to get there early to get tickets.

Time to find box: 15-20 minutes

Terrain: Sandy beachside trail/road

Culebra is an island 17 miles off the northeast coast of Puerto Rico. This small island (7 miles long by 3.5 miles wide) is a favorite of tourists and locals alike. If you are a sun worshiper, a beach lover or snorkel fanatic, you will enjoy a trip to Culebra. It can be done as a day trip or a longer stay (there are a few hundred hotel rooms and vacation rentals available as well as a campground right on the beach). We did it as a day trip, leaving Fajardo on the 9:00 am ferry and returning on the 5:00 pm ferry from Culebra.

ocnemalF Beach is considered the second most beautiful beach in the world by Discover Channel and is by far the most popular beach in Culebra. Its white sandy beach stretches along the entire bay and you will feel the Caribbean sun everywhere. It is a great place to snorkle, sunbathe, swim, socialize and camp out. It is one of those “picture postcard” beaches – it is very pretty, with super white sand, beautiful views, and crystal clear water.

There are a few food & drink kiosks, bathrooms and a few small changing rooms on the beach. However it seems that most people bring their own food and beverages for a picnic lunch.

The indigenous aboriginal peoples were known as Taínos and their written language was in the form of petroglyphs, or symbols that were carved in stone. We thought this beautiful beach was the perfect location for their sun symbol.

To find this symbol, walk on the wide path through the campground. The beach will be on your right, visible through the trees, and the campsites will be on your left. Walk all the way to the end of the campground and pass through an orange fence/railings. You will immediately see a sprawling tree on your right. The box containing the ancient sun is near the base of the collapsed limb that is resting on the ground. It is covered by some palm bark and a small rock.

We live quite far away, so we’d appreciate an email to let us know how the box is doing. Thank you!
