(UNFORTUNATELY MISSING, 5/13/04 - possibly related to the extensive spray-painted graffiti close by . . . both acts are shameful!)

There is a handsome covered bridge at this State Park, which I had discovered some years ago on periodic journeys by car from upstate New York to my sister's home in Fayetteville, AR. It always turned out to be a timely place to have my usual picnic lunch, so that I have stopped there several times - this time with the intent to place a letterbox. It's a particularly stalwart covered bridge despite it's age (1885) - a Howe-truss with 176-ft span, making it the second longest in the State. Repaired in recent years, it's still in frequent use, though posted at 3 tons. The Busching (or Bushing) Bridge deserves your visit. It lies just outside the toll booth, so there is no fee to use or visit, although you may have to extemporize on the parking. (Before I could get these clues up, after my return from Arkansas, lo and behold: another LB had been placed there. Well, there may be some advantage here in numbers . . . !)

The Park is situated just east of Versailles on US 50, perhaps 30 miles west of Cincinnati, and hence very easy to find. If you're not familiar with the area, the hill country of southern Indiana is a delight. But a fast route to drive it is not - take it easy, and you'll get there all the same.

Please note that the bridge is indeed in use, albeit on a secondary road, and walk on it with caution. After you're satisfied that you have a memorable photo (don't these old structures call forth that urge?!), go to the center of the span, one side or the other, to find what you're after. And don't let it drop into the river (Laughery Creek) below.
