The search will begin beside Little Stony Creek in Jefferson National Forest home of Cascade Falls in Pembroke, Virginia (here is a site with some nice photos – http://www.stepinit.com/cascades/cascades_falls_pebroke_va.htm).

To get there from Blacksburg, go west on Route 460 about 18 miles to Pembroke, turn north on Route 623 to the Cascade Recreational Area.

Find the beginning of the trails at the upper end of the parking lot. From the water fountain, go east onto the lower trail past the information kiosk.

Go southeast over the bridge that crosses the water to the right side of the creek.

Continue to follow many stone stairways along the path. You will know you are on the right track when the walkway will pass between two huge rocks. The one on your right will have a steep sloping face. Can you climb it? Trust us, its tough.

Stay the course --- and on the trail. Many benches are along the way in case you need to rest (fore shadowing).

You will pass by a tree growing out of a rock near the water on your left. You’re about 20 minutes into the hike, and you’re getting close.

Next you will come to a stone walkway right next to the water’s edge with a small gravel beach beside it.

As you continue along the trail, start looking for a bench to your right that is made out of a log that has been cut in half (about 35 minutes into the hike). On its right corner will be an arrow pointing southeast.

Go in the direction of the arrow up the hill toward a rock pile with a fallen tree lying across it. Stay to the left of the pile.

Take six walking paces south/southwest (around the rocks). You will now be on the upper side of the rock pile.

Take fourteen walking paces southeast up the hill (be careful – there is loose footing).

Look for a wooden board covered with moss. It will have two holes on its left side (they are larger than nail holes). Beside the board, on the left, is rock that is purple/gray in color. Across from the board is a small tree.

Look underneath the board on the upper side……..

Don't forget to continue up the lower trail to the falls. They are beautiful. The total hike is about 2 miles from the picnic area to the top.
