We’ve planted three letterboxes along three miles of the Taconic Crest Trail (about six miles out and back).

Driving Directions

Drive to where the Taconic Crest Trail crosses Route 2 in Petersburgh. You will find a large parking lot on the south side of Route 2 near the New York/Massachusetts state line. This parking lot is approximately 5 miles west of Williamstown and 25 miles east of Troy.

Hiking Directions

Snowy Owl

Once you get to the parking lot, walk to the southwest corner of the lot and begin walking on the TCT heading south. Stay on the TCT until you reach a left-hand spur that goes up to Petersburgh Mountain/Mount Raimer. This trail is marked with red markers (there is also an “ATVs Prohibited” sign near the start of the spur). Continue up the trail until you reach a fork. Take the right turn of the fork and continue up the hill to the summit. At the summit’s clearing you’ll see the concrete foundations of an old ski lift to the right. Walk down the narrow path in front of the foundation blocks until you just pass the fourth block and are even with a two-trunked sugar maple. Turning right and walking approximately 8 steps into the woods should lead you to a tiny embankment. Atop the embankment, turn left and walk approximately 4 steps through beech trees until you reach a three-trunked red maple tree. The letterbox can be found in the roots of this tree.

Kingfisher

Return to the clearing and head back down Mount Raimer. When you reach the TCT, turn left to keep going towards Berlin Mountain. Continue south on the TCT until you reach the Berlin Pass Trail (it crosses the TCT in the col). The sign for the Berlin Pass Trail is on the left, facing south (you may have to turn around to see it). Continue straight on the TCT for approximately 15 yards until you reach a short trail on the right that provides a relatively unused, alternate connection between the TCT and the Berlin Pass Trail. Halfway down this connector trail you’ll see a 5-trunked birch tree on the left. The letterbox is located behind this tree.

Red-Tailed Hawk

Walk back to the TCT and turn right again towards Berlin Mountain. Continue to the summit clearing. Walk to the central fire pit/concrete blocks area and then turn left and walk straight across the clearing and towards the woods. You’ll find a trail as the clearing ends and the woods begin (the trail descends the mountain to the east). From the spruce tree on the left, walk approximately 33 steps down the trail. On the left side of the trail you’ll see a gnarled 9-trunked beech tree. The letterbox is located in the back of this tree.

You've now collected the Three Birds!
