No amazing history here. Just one of our family’s traditions. When we were kids my mom worked on the weekends. My dad would take my sister and I out for “Sunday Morning Donuts” which meant a trip to the donut shop and then onto a park where we would eat our donuts and play for a while. Looking back it was a pretty smart move on my dad’s part. He didn’t have to come up with something for us to eat for breakfast and we got to blow off some steam and get out of the house for a while. Now, my sister and I have kids of our own. Whenever we visit, one thing that the grandkids always look forward to is “Sunday Morning Donuts” with Papa.
You will find the first letterbox at the donut shop.
From the 5 freeway exit Clairemont Dr. Go east on Clairemont Drive, away from Mission Bay. Travel on Clairemont Drive until Clairemont Drive intersects Iroquois Ave. On your right hand you will see TK Donut shop. Park in the parking lot in front of the donut shop. Between the parking lot and street there is a bus stop. Attached to the bus stop is a cylindrical trash can. Stand on the curb behind the bus stop and reach under the bottom of the trash can. The letterbox is in a tin that is held by magnets to the bottom of the trash can.
Go ahead and get your donuts then you will be on your way to enjoy them at the park.
Travel back down Clairemont Drive, back towards Mission Bay. At the very end of Clairemnont Drive you will come to Mission Bay Drive. Take a left on Mission Bay Drive. Follow Mission Bay Drive all the way to the last park. The park has a big green dinosaur slide. If you go over the bridge or see Fiesta Island Road, you have gone too far. At the far end of the park, near the water, there is a blue play structure with a wobbly bridge. If you are looking at the play structure, facing the water, on the left side there a spiral stairway made of triangle steps. The letterbox is in a metal tin, with magnets, under the first step of that spiral stairway. It is close to the blue post on the left hand side.
