At the top of the violet trail the Lavender Lady is hidden beneath the stone with a bolt in its heart.

This box contains a first finder card with a special impression of the stamp image.

Do you prefer your trail up or down? There is a choice. Either way there are marvelous views along the way. This hike can be combined with a much longer journey in the park or from Sam's Point.

Difficulty:
Reaching this box requires a hike or ride of nine miles or more round-trip on moderately graded carriage roads. This route can be done on a mountain bike or horseback. There is an optional hiking loop with a moderate rock scramble. Many other routes are possible.

Driving Directions:
From New Paltz cross the bridge at the end of Main Street and take Route 299 to the junction with Rt. 44/55 by the Mountain Brauhaus. Turn right onto 44/55 and continue about five miles to the main gate of Minnewaska State Park on the left. Check in at the booth (there is a parking fee) and follow the road up to Wildmere parking by the lake.

From Route 209 turn onto Rt. 44/55 and follow it to the main gate for Minnewaska State Park.

Clue:
Top-Down (Hike/Bike/Horse): From Wildmere parking, head right and follow the red-blazed carriage road about ¼ mile around the lake to the junction with the Castle Point carriage road. Follow the blue-blazed Castle Point carriage road over beautiful views for roughly four miles. When you reach Castle Point enjoy the view then continue to the end of the ledge. You should see three violet trail marks painted on the rock at your feet. This is the beginning of the violet-blazed Scenic Trail. From here look around. There are many boulders. Only one boulder has a bolt in its heart. Beneath it the young lady is hidden behind a sprig of birch in the lee of the stone. Beware of muggles; this is a busy area. Be sure to jam the box back in and hide her well behind rocks after stamping.

Bottom-Up (Hike/Rock Scramble): From Wildmere parking head right to follow the red-blazed carriage road around the lake counter-clockwise for about ½ mile. Turn right onto the yellow-blazed Millbrook Mountain carriage road. After about ¼ mile turn right onto the yellow-blazed Hamilton Point carriage road, which is not open to bikes or horses. Continue for about 3½ miles. You'll pass Echo Rock, and several other interesting view points. Hamilton Point is marked with a sign. Continue past Hamilton Point to nearly the end of the carriageway A violet paint blaze is visible on the left. The violet-blazed Scenic Trail goes up a rock ledge to the right. It's easy to miss. If you reach the end of the carriage road just turn around and follow the violet blazes back a short distance. There are also old green Long Path blazes along this scramble. Go up the Scenic Trail, which is a rock scramble, until you reach a large open view ledge. Follow the trail up to the top of Castle Point. There are many boulders. Only one has a bolt in its center. Josephine is hidden beneath it behind a sprig of birch in the lee of the stone. Beware of muggles and be sure to jam the box in behind small stones after stamping.

The Long Way (Hike/Rock Scramble/Cave): Place a car at Lake Minnewaska and take the scenic trail all the way from Sam's Point. This is a long through-hike (there's no camping along the way). There is a wonderful waterfall and a brief passage through a cool cave along the way.

From Castle Point you can go to Lake Minnewaska by the blue-blazed Castle Point carriageway or for a further challenge take the blue-blazed Blueberry Run trail. The end of this trail is just beyond Castle Point on the right. It will take you to the green-blazed Upper Awosting carriage road. Turning right on this carriage road will take you two miles back to Lake Minnewaska.
