Hillside Cemetery is located at 50 Mulberry Street, Middletown, NY 10940.

Enter the cemetery and pass the historical marker for Calvert Vaux and the notable graves sign. Continue beyond the green maintenance shed on the right. (You may want to park here and continue on foot.) When the road forks, continue following the road up the hill and to the right.

At Morrison’s bench, make a right and walk up a grassy, windy pathway. You will pass a white house with a widow’s watch on your right.

At the next fork, stay to the right. Proceed straight until you reach a paved circle, marked by Jordan’s monument. Follow the circle to the right until you pass the Davidge plot on your left. Turn right and continue.

After you pass three closely-spaced pillars labeled Otis, Seybolt and Piersen, notice a small blank headstone a few feet from the road. Its opposite side reads: “100 feet to the left lie the graves of Middletown’s earliest settlers...” Find those settlers.

Continue in a straight line past the settlers until you reach a dirt road. Walk over the road and toward the tree line (treading respectfully). Follow the tree line to the right and look for 19th century gravestones lying on their backs. After the last lying tombstone, find a pile of rocks. Look among them and you will find what you seek.
