The Wandering Bird Letterbox is in the Franklin State Forest in Franklin Massachusetts. The letterbox is places on a 1.5 mile loop through the state forest and will take about 45 minutes.

DIRECTIONS:
If coming from the south on Route 495, take King Street/Franklin exit. Go west on King Street (away from the center of Franklin) and travel 1.6 miles. Turn right onto Grove Street and proceed 1.8 miles to the State Forest sign on the left side of the road. Park in pull-off on the side of the road by the sign.

If coming from the north on Route 495, take the Franklin/Route 140 exit. Go toward Bellingham (northwest on Route 140) about 100 feet from the exit and turn left onto Grove Street. Follow Grove Street 0.7 miles to pull-off and State Forest sign on the right.

No admission fee; no facilities; dogs are allowed; open dawn to dusk.

CLUES:
Head up the trail that starts behind the State Forest sign. The trail is wide, rocky, and slightly uphill. A few minutes into the walk, you will see some houses on your right. You will pass through an opening in the stone wall. Right after passing through the stone wall a trail goes off to the left but continue ahead, bearing right. The trail passes by a few more houses on the right and then will curve left into the forest as you pass through another stone wall. Follow this trail (stone wall should be on the left side of the trail).

Soon the power line will be directly in front of you. Before you come to the power lines, the trail will turn left. Follow the blue triangles. Follow this path parallel to the power lines. It will then curve left into the woods. The path will wind you through a stand of small white pines. You will come to a stone wall that you have to step over, not through. Right after this stone wall, there will be a large pile of rocks on your right and an oak tree with a blue triangle on the left. Stand with your back to the oak tree and look across the trail. At the end of the pile of boulders there is a double trunked maple tree. One of the trunks looks like it is dead, the other is living. The Wandering Bird Letterbox is hidden in the leaves and rocks at the base of this maple tree. Stamp in and re-hide.

Continue on the trail. You will come to a fork. At the fork there will be a tree on the right side of the path that has some white numbers spray painted on it. Bear left here. You will soon come to a beautiful stand of beech trees. After leaving the beech grove the trial begins to wind downhill, then merges with another trail coming in from the left a couple minutes before reaching the pull-off to the parking area.
