from the picnic pavilion at Winding Hills Park walk through the playground toward Upper Pond. Continue straight over the small bridge. stop at the first bench. Upper Pond is a man made body of water built in 1948. It is spring fed and hosts tons of wildlife. Take a moment to look around. Can you find any insects? You might even spot fish, turtles, frogs, and birds.
Continue on the path keeping the lake on your left. After passing the second bench stay left. You will see an information plaque on a post. Stop here. Directly in front of you is two trees each of which has a vine climbing up it. Do not touch! One of the vines will cause you to break out in a rash and itch. The other has medicinal properties. Can you identify which one is Poison Ivy and which one is Virginia Creeper (a.k.a Woodbine, bark and twigs used for cough syrup and roots used for belly aches).
Continue walking passing the third bench. In this area you will see a lot of dead fall on your right. This is a great spot for some "balancing" if you have little ones in tow. Another thing you will spot in this area are many different types of mushrooms. Please do not disturb them, just observe them. Pass by bench number 4.
Continuing on you will reach an incline. Straight ahead you will see where two rock walls meet. Cross over the first rock wall and stay to your left crossing over the second rock wall. You will see two very large rocks. One is in the shape of a pyramid and the other is a dome. Great for climbing.
Continue on the path keeping the pond on your left. Pass by bench number 5. You will walk up an incline and then at the bottom of the hill will be bench number 6. In front of this bench are two logs lying in the water that cross. There is also an old tree trunk. Keep the lake at your back and peer over the bench and to the right. You will see an old pile of pine logs which have been cut with a chainsaw. Under one of the smaller pieces is the Letterbox.
We hope you enjoyed your walk. To return to the pavilion area you can continue up the hill path or take the path that is closer to the pond. Just keep the pond to your left.
