I have been hiking across the country ever since I was a little kid. After living here for two years, I have found that the vistas in San Diego to be some of the most breathtaking, and it's right in our backyard. But of all the hikes that I have been on, Mt. Woodson seems to me one of the most rewarding climbs in the area. Not only does the mountain sit next to a beautiful recreational lake, but it offers clear, stable paths that wind up the mountainside. I find it only fitting, that this mountain deserves a letterbox. Follow the directions to find my letter box, Fish Under the Rock. It's a nice resting spot about 2/3 of the way up the mountain.

Start at the boating dock and take the Mt. Woodson trail to your right. It starts as a paved path that runs alongside Lake Poway, but turns into a dirt path. The dirt path will split; take the higher one farther from the lake. Follow the Mt. Woodson trail as it ascends offering a great view of the lake on your left. The trail will seem to direct you away from the lake, but it will circle around. After approximately 1/2 mile from starting on the trail, you will come to another trail head. Take the Mt. Woodson Trail to Mt. Woodson Summit 2.9 MI. The gravel trail will continue up the foothill. Continue following the Mt. Woodson trail signs, always turning left any time the trail forks. After a pretty steep climb on the gravel path, you will come across a fairly flat meadow area; this is the transition from the foothill to Mt. Woodson. Enjoy the break while you can.

Approximately a mile from the last trail head sign, the trail will split: left, Mt. Woodson Trail; right, Warren Canyon Tr. You should know where to go by now. Continue left up the trail as you slowly start to climb Mt. Woodson. The trail will zig zag a little as you start ascending North East. After approximately 1/4 mile, the trail will take a turn heading North West starting to get a little steeper. You are starting to get close to the letter box!! As you zig zag even more, the trail will get steeper and you will see some stones that were created to make stairs. Keep zigzagging and you should come across a rock that resembles Pride Rock from The Lion King, approximately a 1/2 mile from the last trailhead. My letterbox is under there. It is a very large rock and offers a good place to sit and rest. The rock is actually split in two where you can peep through and see the countryside behind it. If you walk past the rock and turn around and look at it, you should be facing the south. The picture I've included is of exactly this). To the right of the rock you will see a couple of steps down. My letterbox is hiding just inside the rock and should be covered with branches and other rocks. Please stamp my pad and use the fish stamp to stamp yours. When you are finished, replace the box and its contents in the plastic bags and cover it back up with leaves or other rocks to hide it from view. By all means, continue up the mountain to catch the view! You can see the coast and parts of San Diego and North County from there. Last time I was there, I was eye level with a couple of prop planes. HAPPY HIKING!!
