Lead Mining
"The first permanent white settler in what is now Dubuque was a Quebecois pioneer, Julien Dubuque, who arrived in 1785. In 1788, he received permission from the Spanish government and the local Fox tribe of American Indians to mine the area's rich lead deposits. Control of Louisiana (and Dubuque's mines) shifted briefly back to France in 1800, then to the United States in 1803, following the Louisiana Purchase. Dubuque died in 1810, but the wealth of minerals drew a number of new pioneers and settlers, mostly French and other Europeans." (Wikipedia)
We heard there is a vein of lead ore southwest of Dubuque, near the town of Peosta, in the nature preserve at 13606 Swiss Valley Road. It is open from sunrise to sunset.
To find your lead mine, go to the preserve and park in the lot, near the trailhead. At the Forest Ecology Trail, take the woodchip trail to the right. Eventually you will pass two benches and cross a bridge. Continue to the right, ignoring the trail and bench to the left. (You may want to stop later to enjoy the view of Catfish Creek.)
Cross two more bridges and proceed upward, to the right, on the Woodland Ecology Trail. At the Y, continue upward on the wooden plank stairs. At the top of the stairs, rest on the plank bench on your right, looking toward a large rocky outcrop. Walk toward it, crossing two small streambeds.
On the far side of the rocky outcrop, see a bush covering tree roots. Reach up and look behind stones, to find a mining tool, hidden in a box.
