Discover CT

BRING YOUR OWN INK. NO INK IS INCLUDED WITH BOXES. Logbook with each box.

Every state has it’s own seals and symbols. They include state flower, tree, bird, animal, song, and even state insect. It can be fun to look these emblems up. That is why I hope these three boxes will encourage you to "Discover CT". To find out more about our great state, visit CT.gov, or, use the old fashioned way -- an encyclopedia!

Directions:

These boxes are located at the Webb Mountain Discovery Zone in Monroe. The Discovery Zone can be reached by either Rte.111 in Monroe or Rte. 110 in Shelton, to East Village Rd., to Webb Circle.

Clues:

Make sure to pick up a trail map on your way in. Take Froggy Freeway to Turtle Turnpike to Pond Parkway. Notice the familiar looking shrubs all along Pond Parkway. As you ascend a rocky hill, almost near the top, there will be a 2-sister tree on your left that has a “Pond Parkway” sign tacked to it. See the rocks behind this tree? Now, see the rock that is on the end on the right? Look under it’s corner for Box # 1: State Flower. You might want to keep going along this trail to learning station 18 before continuing.

After locating Box 1, turn around and head back the way you came. When Pond Parkway meets Turtle Turnpike, take a right. Continue on Turtle Turnpike until you come to Salamander St. Take a left onto Salamander St. After passing the “Three-trunk Oak” learning station, look for a 4-sister tree on your left. Look inside the tree for Box #2: State Tree. After stamping in, continue on Salamander St in the direction in which you were headed.

When you have reached the intersection of Hawk Highway, take a left. After passing the “Early 19th Century Quarry”, watch for a “Hawk Highway” sign posted to a tree on your left. Behind this tree will be two 2-sister trees. Go to the second, larger 2-sister tree. Look in the middle of it for Box #3: State Bird. I can tell you that the state bird is not a hawk!

Get back on the trail, going in the direction in which you were headed. You will again come to Froggy Freeway. Take a right, which will lead you back to your car. Perhaps, in your letterboxing travels, you may come across a Discover CT hitchhiker, if you’re lucky enough!
