*** Part of my TX Birding Trail Series ***
Terrain Difficulty: Easy (flat, 200 yards RT)
Recommended Ink: green
Status: alive
The Olive Sparrow, or Texas Sparrow, is the only sparrow with an olive back. It can be found in southern Texas in chaparral and undergrowth near forests, like what is found in Hugh Ramsey Nature Park. It is one of the World Birding Center sites and is part of the Los Loros Loop described on the Lower Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail map. You have a good chance of seeing this bird, along with this box, so be sure to visit the next time you are in the Rio Grande Valley.
Directions:
From Harlingen go south on Hwy 77 then east on Ed Carey/Loop 499 for about 2 miles to just past the Arroyo Colorado River. Turn right into Arroyo Colorado World Bird Center at Hugh Ramsey Nature Park.
Clues:
At center of parking area walk on the Indigo trail past the bird blind on the right to jct with Retama Trail on the left. Continue on Indigo Trail 50 steps to a bench on the right, then 80 steps to a bench on the left. Continue 20 steps, turn right and go 18 steps off trail to a tree beyond a clump of cactus. Letterbox is in a hole 4 feet high. Please replace as described and be discreet.
