*** Part of my TX Birding Trail Series ***
Terrain Difficulty: Easy (flat, 100 yards RT)
Recommended Ink: brown
Status: alive
The King Rail is the largest North American rail and is distinctive for its long bill with a slight downward curve that it uses to eat insects. It can be found in marshes on the southern coast, like what is found along the Laguna Madre Nature Trail. It is part of the South Padre Island Loop described on the Lower Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail map. You have a good chance of seeing this bird, along with this box, so be sure to visit the next time you are down south.
Directions:
From Port Isabel go across the Causeway to South Padre Island and go north on Padre Blvd about 4 miles to the Convention Center on the left. Drive around circle in front and park on left curb near the Laguna Madre Nature Trail.
Clues:
Walk to the boardwalk but continue straight to a gazebo in a garden. Continue 5 steps beyond it, then go 5 steps right to the back side of a low tree branch. Letterbox is hanging in branch 3 feet high. Please replace as described and be discreet.
