After the celebrated showman P. T. Barnum died in 1891, his estate was valued at a then staggering $4.3 million. The impresario had made his fortune in part from the huge profits of his book sales and circus tours, but largely from speculations in real estate, including land here in Port Jefferson.
According to local legend, Barnum “discovered” Port Jefferson during the 1870s when his Museum, Menagerie, and Circus traveled to the village. Enamored with the area, he purchased Brick Hill and planned to establish the circus’s winter quarters in Port Jefferson, only to be rebuffed by provincial villagers opposed to his grandiose ideas.
Contrary to above, Barnum's tour books and logs never recorded a show in Port Jefferson.
If the circus were to pull into town today in Port Jefferson where would they PARK?
Lions and tigers and bears oh my
Through the trapeze the artists may fly
Let lamp post NUMBER FOUR light your way
Now P.T. Barnum is here to stay!!!
