MONSTER-OUS (NOT FOR TRADE)

It’s “monster-ous,” the amount of energy drinks consumed by our teens (and by their parents!) All that flavoring, coloring, corn syrup and those herbal infusions that make your teeth grow in the moonlight, and make long, silky strands of hair sprout from the tips of your ears. Scary stuff!

This is an “old-school” classic series of letterboxes, urging hikers and bikers and boxers to get back to drinking good-old H2O. (Be sure to bring some with you on this hike.) All of the letterboxes are hidden on one trail system. Use the black ink provided to record the stamp. Then take a drink of water while the ink dries. Finish the stamp with the colored pencils also provided. When you have finished, please hide the box completely.

DIRECTIONS: You can search for these boxes a couple of ways:
1) You can have a monstrous good time finding all of them in one hike. East Village Road, from either Shelton or Monroe. To Longfellow Road, all the way to the end. Right before the cul-de-sac, take a left onto Bryant, and then a right on to Thoreau. Look on the left for the blue Paugussett Trail blazes on the telephone poles. Park, and climb down the stairs, between the kindly neighbors’ yards until you reach the brook. Follow the blue-blazed trail through Webb Mt. Park, all of the way to Lake Zoar.
2) You can Park along the fire road leading to the campsites in Webb Mt. Park, and then pick up the blue trail and boxes #3, #2 and #1 to the right of the road, and boxes #4, #5 and #6 to the left of the road.
3) There will be some ledge climbing if you choose option 2) above. If you prefer to avoid the climb, you can drive to the blue trail head at the boat ramp on RT34 at Lake Zoar, and follow the blue blazes across the railroad tracks until you find the last three boxes.

CLUES: (Following the directions for 1) above) BOX#1: MONSTER RED, Cross the brook and follow left up the hill, past the falls. You will come to a part of the trail where large flat stones have been set into the trail to form steps. And then smaller stones have been set on edge across the trail to prevent a washout. Stop here, and look to the right. See a smooth gray boulder, and to its left, a two-sister tree. One sister is much larger than the other. Go around the back of the large sister and you should see two red eyes and a scary face staring back at you. Turn your back on the monster. Look down in front of you about five feet to see a pizza-size flat stone. MONSTER RED LETTERBOX is under the stone.

BOX#2: MONSTER BLUE, Continue on the blue trail, past the intersection with the Orange Trail. You will come to the intersection with the Yellow Trail at Yellow Marker #11. Turn left onto the Yellow Trail and hike until you come to Marker #27. With #27 at you left shoulder, look to the right up toward the ridge. See a singular straight tree on the ridge. Go to the tree. As you stand on the ridge, still looking away from the Trail, you will see a rocky knob to your right. Go to the rocky knob. Standing on the knob, look to the right to see a singular round boulder. Go to the boulder. Now look to your left, about twenty feet to see two beady blue eyes and a scary face looking back at you. Standing with your back to the monster, see a tree with its roots exposed and gripping a pile of small rocks. ( FYI, you are very close to the Mellow Yellow Geocache Box.) MONSTER BLUE LETTERBOX is under the roots, under a flat stone. Return to the Yellow Trail, and reconnect with the Blue Trail.

BOX#3: MONSTER GREEN, Continue to descend on the blue trail. You will come upon a two-sister tree almost in the middle of the trail. Look to the left, into the woods and up to the crest of the hill to see a large three-sister tree. Walk to the right of this tree and look ahead to a very smooth two-sister. Walk to the left of this tree you are actually walking on a covered stone wall. Follow this wall, and you will come to a large boulder. Standing on the boulder and looking ahead, you should catch the wink of a red eye. Go to it and find another scary face. Standing with your back to the monster, walk eight steps to the tree with a long flat stone at its base. The MONSTER GREEN LETTERBOX is hidden under leaves between the tree and the stone. (While you are in the area, you might want to visit MUDPUPPY ONE and PRIVATE from the MADAGASGAR PENGUINS. You also might want to continue walking in the direction that you were going to reach the red trail. A right on red, and around the fallen tree, and you are back to the blue. If you continue on the blue, you will cross a stream and climb out of the woods onto the Fire/Entrance Road to Webb Mt. Park.

(THE NEXT THREE BOXES ARE TO THE LEFT OF THE FIRE/ENTRANCE ROAD TO WEBB MT. PARK.)

BOX #4: MONSTER PURPLE, Cross the road and climb the blue trail up the hill to the left. Before you come to the second blue-blazed tree, you will see a large flat rock to the left of the trail. Turn left into the woods at this rock, and climb carefully until you reach the jumble of boulders at the place where the hill starts to flatten out. Now turn right and pass along the left side of a two-sister tree. The very next tree ahead of you has a scary face. Standing with your back to the monster, you are looking at two very large flat boulders, stacked on top of each other. The MONSTER PURPLE LETTERBOX is sandwiched between them, hidden behind a few rocks.

BOX #5: MONSTER ORANGE, Continue on the blue trail which will start to descend. You will come upon a large, fallen and decayed pine tree across the path and carved out for easy passage. And then you will come to the ledge. It is an athletic climb! At the top, you will see a two-headed curved arrow painted on a rock on the ground in the trail. DO NOT follow this to the right, as the arrow indicates. Take the unmarked trail leading to the left instead. It will bring you to a large bald knob of rock and a roundish upright boulder to the left. Look to the left, and you will see the bald knob of rock extending quite a distance up the hill. Follow it ALL THE WAY until you run out of rock! If you are at the right spot, you will look to your right and see a pair of scary blue eyes peering back at you. Stand back-to-back with the monster, and you are facing a thin ledge of rock. The MONSTER ORANGE LETTERBOX is hidden behind some rocks in the cavity under the upper edge of this ledge.

BOX #6: MONSTER YELLOW, You can retrace your steps back to the curved two-headed arrow, and then continue on, following the blue blazes. OR, you can be adventurous and retrace your path from the monster, just a few steps until you pass a small birch tree on your left. Look to your left, and you can see a notch in the rocks and a clear unmarked path leading down from the knob. Follow the unmarked path over several more bald knobs, always descending. A little observation and trail sense will keep you on the worn path. You will come to the blue trail exactly at the spot where there is a blue blaze painted on a large flat rock in the middle of the trail.

If you have retraced your path all the way to the arrow, follow the blue trail until you come to this flat rock. Continue on until you come to a rocky descending ledge. (Much smaller than the first!) Stop before you descend, and look to your left. (If you have been following the trail from the Lake Zoar trailhead, you will come to this ledge and look to the right.) You will see four fallen and dead trees close together and stretched out across the ground. Step over each one until you come to a fifth fallen. Look to the left, and another pair of scary blue eyes will be looking back at you. Stand with your back to the monster, and look up and to the right, and you will see a small cave formed by the ledge about 15 steps ahead of you. THE MONSTER YELLOW LETTERBOX is hidden in this cave behind a few rocks.

Congratulations! You have accomplished something monstrous. Return to the blue trail, and retrace your path, back to Lake Zoar, or back to the Fire/Entrance Road, or all the way back to Thoreau.
