The Dry Creek Drummer is hidden along on of the more lightly traveled trails in the Columbia River Gorge. The hike is just over five miles roundtrip and has an elevation gain of only 710 feet. A short side trip will take you to Dry Creek Falls.
To the trailhead:
From I-84, take the Cascade Locks exit heading towards the Bridge of the Gods. As the road curves uphill towards the toll booth you will see a small park on your right. Park here and cross the road to the trail, a section of the Pacific Crest Trail headed south.
To the letterbox:
Follow this trail under the freeway and go left at the next trail junction. You will see markers identifying this as the PCT. Pass beneath power lines and continue slightly uphill, where the trail re-enters the woods.
You will come to a four way junction with unmarked Dry Creek Road. A right turn at this point will take you to the waterfall in .3 miles. To find the letterbox, continue across the wooden bridge on the PCT. Watch for a snag bearing the distinctive signs of a Pileated Woodpecker: long, rectangular holes. Just before the bend in the trail, the letterbox is hidden beneath a mossy rock.
