This series of three letterboxes is located at the Fort Custer State Recreation Area in Calhoun County, southern Michigan. Fort Custer is located between Battle Creek and Kalamazoo, just north of I-94.
The Park access is south from M96 east of Augusta. Michigan State Park permit is required; daily permit is available.

Clues:
There are three letterboxes in this series.
Clues begin at the Whitford Lake Picnic Area parking lot.
Access the trail at the right/south part of the picnic area.
There is a map at the trailhead. It’s worth a look.
The trail ambles past farm fields with the lake coming in and out of view on your left.
The trail moves into the woods.
And then “IT” looms on your right.
What was it?
When was it?
Check it out carefully – it would be a great place for a letterbox – but it’s not (at least for now).
It could play into your clues though.
Wow! How high is that thing?
How many steps to the top?
Back on the trail, you cross a steel mesh bridge, then a wooden planked one.
Eventually you’re left with a choice.
Then two bare posts from earlier trail markings on your right.
Next 30 paces to see an unusual, shaggy bark tree just off the trail on the right.
Sight 280 degrees from the shaggy.
Forty steps take you to a crotchety destination.

“Snap”, it’s yours.

The trail passes some cut logs and limbs.
Continue along, and along and along.
Eventually up some loggy steps and finally cross the gravel.
Now you’re getting pumped!
Finally you walk an isthmus, past some fallen giants
then see a magnificent oak on your right.

Sight 280 degrees and walk three and a half times the number of rungs you counted earlier.
At about ten feet from the root end you discover “Crackle”.
That makes two.

The trail continues along an east-west straight stretch, then a side trail presents at 180 degrees.
Take 28 steps and then follow the log on the ground to your right.
The stump at its end is hiding “Pop”.

There you have the Breakfast Elves: Snap, Crackle & Pop.
Enjoy.

Either re-trace or continue on your trail.
