This letterbox is part of the 2012 Roads to Freedom program, and is available from June 1, 2012 – September 3, 2012. To participate in the full program, please pick up your free Civil War Journal (program guide) from any Adams County Library or at the Historic Train Station in downtown Gettysburg.
This letterbox will require you to work through downtown Gettysburg starting at Lincoln Square. It is 0.62 miles in distance and is rated "easy" by Roads to Freedom standards.
NOTE: Locating this artifact requires you to walk along busy streets. Always be aware of traffic and follow all rules.
Begin your march at 1 Lincoln Square – the Gettysburg Hotel. Did you know that some people referred to the Square as the “diamond” during the Civil War?
Turn left and walk toward the house where President Lincoln stayed the night before giving the Gettysburg Address. Carefully cross the street to reach this house.
Continue past the “permanently standing men” nearby, heading clockwise around the “diamond.”
Carefully cross the next street and locate the monument to Company K (the local boys). Write down the first digit in the number of Adams Countians who participated in the battle. ___
Walk toward the large timepiece and turn left down this road. You will pass a church built in the mid 1830’s.
Continue walking until you find a building that has fruit designs on it. You will need to look up to see this design. Do not cross the street, but turn left at this building.
Walk ___ blocks (number you wrote above) down this street, being careful when crossing other streets, and turn left.
You should see a large house with two front doors set back from the street. A wayside will be nearby and the artifact attached there.
To return to your vehicle, continue down this street (back toward town). You should walk between two churches. Upon reaching the stoplight, turn left and march back to the “diamond.”
