This letterbox is part of the 2012 Roads to Freedom program, and is available from June 1, 2012 – September 3, 2012. To participate in the full program, please pick up your free Civil War Journal (program guide) from any Adams County Library or at the Historic Train Station in downtown Gettysburg.
This letterbox is located in Gettysburg National Military Park and may be accessed from the Taneytown Road parking area. It is 0.38 miles in distance and is rated "easy" by Roads to Freedom standards.
Clues for the Brogan and Lint/Bandages artifacts will take participants on a loop that returns you to your vehicle. If you do not find this artifact before the Lint/Bandages one, you may be confused or lost.
Start at the Maryland Monument near the Taneytown Road entrance to the National Cemetery parking lot.
Walk south – away from town – along the walkway and past the Delaware Monument.
Continue until you reach a small white house – the Leister Farm – that was used as General Meade’s Headquarters during the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863.
Continue along the green walkway to the right and up the hill.
As you approach the top of the hill, you will see the monument of General Meade on his horse. Continue along the walkway as it curves in front of this statue.
Pass several cannons and caissons, and carefully cross the roadway when the sidewalk ends.
Once you cross the road, you will find four wayside panel displays explaining a significant moment in the Battle of Gettysburg. The artifact you seek is attached to the leg of one of these displays.
NOTE: To complete your trek, use the directions for the Lint/Bandages artifact.
