George Gipp, nicknamed The Gipper, was born and raised in Larium, Michigan and is buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Calumet, Michigan.

The Gipper was Notre Dame’s first All-American and is considered one of the greatest all-around college football players of all time. His exploits on and off the field are legendary. Off the field, he would gamble, drink, and hustle pool. On the field, he played inspirational football.

Even after he died, he could still inspire the team. Eight years after he died, Notre Dame was playing Army, with Army being a huge favorite. At halftime, Notre Dame’s coach, Knute Rockne, told the team what The Gipper said to him on his deathbed:

I've got to go, Rock. It's all right. I'm not afraid. Some time, Rock, when the team is up against it, when things are wrong and the breaks are beating the boys, ask them to go in there with all they've got and win just one for the Gipper. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock. But I'll know about it, and I'll be happy.

Notre Dame beat Army 12-6.
