This box is one of a series of boxes placed in Highland County on public trails. They were placed to help visitors to our county find public places to get out and walk and enjoy the beauty of the mountains.
From Staunton Virginia take Route 250 west to the top of Shenandoah Mountain. Right before you reach the top, you will see a gravel road on your left. Turn up into that road and park in the parking lot. The box is about a fifteen minute walk up the road. I have no idea why there are numbered trees along the road (and neither did the conservation officer that I asked) but they will guide you to the box.
After you find the box and walk back down to your car, drive just a little further west and take your picture at the breathtaking overlook on top of the mountain.
If you can count and study trees
Then finding this will be a breeze
From your car walk through the gate
And to your left, you’ll spy tree 8
Then 7, 9 and 6 appear
An open field is very near
Off to your left when leaves are few
A little further, there’s a view
Then more trees, 4,7,5
It won’t be long till you arrive
Then on your left you’ll spy a 3
Then on your right two numbered trees
1 and 2 , look left once more
A road turns to the valley floor
Take that road, a dozen steps
Then to your right an old stump rests
The treasure’s buried in the ground
That’s Mountain Trails Box 1 you’ve found.
