Chaw’se/ Indian Grinding Rock State Park, about ten miles east of Jackson, has a recreated Miwok village, interpretive trails and a quiet campground. Nearby you will also find Black Chasm Cave, Daffodil Hill and a fabulous shoe tree in the small town of Volcano.

To the trailhead: Go east from Jackson on either route 88 or 104 to the town of Pine Grove. There you will go left on the Pine Grove-Volcano road to the park.

To the letterbox: Circumambulate the hung’e until you meet up with a coralled Quercus Lobata. Go round this native until you have a trail at 200 degrees and a pine at 210. Go behind the pine where you will see some broken lower limbs. Just below, at the base of the tree, gently lift the mat of sticks and needles to reveal the letterbox.
