Explore Letterbox

This box is placed at Akenac Park on Route 739 in Dingmans Ferry, PA.

Akenac Park is a wonderful place. There is a lake, and in the summer there are lifeguards for swimming, and canoeing for a small fee. Catch & release fishing is allowed. There’s a giant playground and lots of sand. Tennis courts and volleyball are other fun options here. For more information go to: http://www.delawaretownshippa.gov/ and click on the Akenac Park link.

To find this letterbox, start by looking across the dirt road from where you’ve parked on the grass lot. To your left is the driveway to the library, to your right is the lake. Somewhere in-between there is a tan-colored wooden foot bridge. To the left of the footbridge there is a white box that opens from the front. Perhaps there are sometimes trail guides in it.

Walk across the foot bridge and see a circular blue tag with a white arrow as a trail mark on a tree. There is also blue tape around the trunk and white trail blazes on trees to mark this trail. This trail is rugged, so sneakers are recommended, and it is not stroller-friendly, but short enough for kids to do well on. There are lots of tree roots and rocks to walk over. Keep walking on the trail, and you’ll pass a little brown bench on your left. The lake is on your right. Continue to follow the white trail blazes and blue ribbons around tree trunks to remain on the trail.

On your right, see a beautiful peninsula with two benches for enjoyment of the view. As you continue down the trail you’ll pass some twisty trees and an ash tree whose trunk has been eaten by bores. Pass another bench and a dead tree. Keep following the circular blue tags with the white arrows. To your right there will be another peninsula with a hollowed out tree that has a hole at its base. To your left there will be a large, flat, angled rock. Stop here. Underneath this rock, you will find the Explore Letterbox, hidden behind other flat rocks. Move the rocks to find it, but be sure to replace well. The rock makes a perfect spot to sit on for stamping.

If you get to where you see the number 4, you have gone too far.

Be sure to keep an eye on the ground as you walk this trail so you do not step into holes, and be careful of wobbly rocks.

Enjoy exploring! You may continue on down this trail to enjoy more peaceful scenery, including a marshy area, then trek through the woods. The trail loops around and you’ll end up behind the small library and historical society building, across the street from where you’ve parked. Listen for the many birds that make their home in this peaceful place, and enjoy this special space.
